Here are my thoughts on choosing your major that can hopefully help you out!

A little bit of background: In high school, I loved math and physics. I knew I could not stand another biology or chemistry class. So with that in mind, I thought engineering might be a good path for me! My parents, both being physics majors, have always been very supportive of me studying in the STEM field and encouraged to go after what I was interested in.

But then I was facing so many options: mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, computer science, electrical engineering… and I didn’t know how to make the decision! Luckily for me, my high school offered its first computer science course (Intro to Java) during my senior year. It turned out that I really enjoyed programming and for the first time, I could imagine what I would be doing if I studied computer science! I could be a software engineer, mobile app developer, etc. but the most important part was that I finally found a tangible role that I enjoyed. So I applied to colleges and indicated that I was interested in computer science, and it has not let me down.

The biggest takeaway for me was that realizing that tangible interest was so important. If you’re interested in something, or feel a certain inclination towards a specific major, I would go with your gut instinct. You can always try it out and if you end up not liking it, it’s super easy to switch! In the end, you know yourself the best, so go with what you feel is right for you 🙂

Good luck with wrapping up application season![/cs_text][/cs_column][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/5″ style=”padding: 0px;”][x_custom_headline level=”h5″ looks_like=”h5″ accent=”false” class=”cs-ta-center” style=”color: hsl(0, 95%, 18%);”]About the Author[/x_custom_headline][x_image type=”circle” src=”https://viterbivoices.usc.edu/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/Slack1.jpg” alt=”” link=”true” href=”https://viterbivoices.usc.edu/yingyu/” title=”” target=”blank” info=”popover” info_place=”bottom” info_trigger=”hover” info_content=”Yingyu Computer Science ’19”][cs_text class=”cs-ta-center”]Yingyu is a junior studying Computer Science.
