What We Do
Viterbi Student Ambassadors (VSAs) speak to students at official admission events (virtual information sessions, live chats, and in the past, Discover USC and Explore), and generally act as a resource for any questions that prospective students may have about the student experience at Viterbi.
This webpage is also maintained by the VSA team, but is a platform dedicated to showcasing all types of student experiences (including yours!).
As VSAs, our primary goal is to share our own, real stories of our time at USC, in the hopes that we can provide a window of insight for prospective students during what is always a stressful and confusing period in their lives – the college admission process.
Join the VSA Team!
The VSA team is looking for engaged, excited current Viterbi students (that’s you!) to join us!
The application for the 2023-2024 school year is now open and you can find the application here. Ambassadors and VSA admin will be in contact with you once you submit to guide you along the process. We look forward to meeting you all and gaining wonderful additions to our team!
A Day in the Life of a VSA
As a Viterbi Student Ambassador, you will contribute to a spectrum of voices from Viterbi engineers through creative activities including video creation, live chat hosting, podcast making, social media planning, and blogging. While no experience is necessary in any of these, a desire to work hard to learn these skills on the job definitely is!
Responding to questions on the spot is another important skill when speaking at admission-related events, but no prior formal public speaking experience is needed. As a new member of the VSA team you will have plenty of time to practice in both training workshops and staff meetings!
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the time commitment like?
It depends! VSAs attend weekly staff meetings, write a blog every two weeks, and act as student liaisons at 1-2 admission events each month. Most VSAs tend to spend 2-3 additional hours a week working on content for their creative teams, and this time commitment increases as you take on more leadership! There also tend to be certain weeks of the semester that are busier than others (particularly those close to USC application deadlines or large-scale events!).
Is joining VSA like joining a student organization?
No! Being a Viterbi Student Ambassador is a paid position with flexible billable hours, and so VSAs are expected to conduct ourselves professionally. However, as a team we make an effort to replicate many elements of student organizations, including a mentorship program and social events!
Is being a VSA the same as being a content creator?
No! While both VSAs and content creators write blogs for Viterbi Voices, VSA requires a larger time commitment and has additional responsibilities such as curating new content for all our platforms, providing a student perspective on panels, and filling in undergraduate admission gaps in student representation. If you would like a smaller time commitment, check out our content creator page for more information.
Is it necessary for me to be involved in research or engineering organizations?
Absolutely not! Our members are involved in a range of extracurricular activities both within and outside of Viterbi, so you do not need specific resumé items or engineering experiences to apply! As VSAs we aim to highlight a representative and diverse set of Viterbi experiences, so we want to hear about your unique involvements.
Are VSAs still doing admission-related work during COVID-19?
Yes! Our team is actively involved in a range of virtual outreach and admission events, including biweekly live chats, weekly Zoom information sessions for prospective students, and continued social media engagement. Additionally, all of our content teams have shifted online, and we have continued to highlight new and underrepresented voices in podcast, blog, and video content!
What year do I have to be to apply?
We accept applications from undergraduate freshmen, sophomores and juniors, including transfer students!
Do I need to have prior experience with content creation to apply?
No! While VSAs are involved in creating podcasts, videos, blogs and social media content, all new members of the team will undergo training in the first few months of the year!
