Five semesters here have passed, and I’m halfway through my junior year of college. It sounds so crazy, and it honestly doesn’t feel like I’ve been here that long. I’ve had so many incredible experiences in college, and even at this point, there are so many more that I’m looking forward to having. Luckily, living in southern California, there’s plenty to do and so many things to see.

The first weekend of school, I surprise-visited my sister at her school. We were able to eat some amazing food (seriously, some of the best food I’ve ever had!) and hang out at the beach. There was already a little bit of reading for me to do, but I was able to get it done in the downtime. I drove up with my friends about 4 hours. Road trips are my favorite thing to do (as long as they aren’t toooo too long), and this one was great. The weather was perfect, and we had all the essentials: a good playlist, good company, and scenery.

When I came back, it was back to reality. I’m taking some of the hardest classes that are required as part of my curriculum this semester, including the notorious CSCI 350: Operating Systems. In this class, we learn a lot about how operating systems work, and how to build a small-scale operating system, and we get to practice – more like master – C coding. The course includes topics such as concurrency, deadlock control, synchronization scheduling, memory management, protection and access control, inter-process communication, and structured design.

Though I’ve got that difficult class, along with Databases, which covers file input and output techniques, file organization, file managers, principles of databases, conceptual data models, and query languages, I’m also taking a fun class for my minor: Marketing. The cool thing about having a minor in another discipline outside of engineering is that you get to take classes in that school. I’ve got friends doing drawing minors, nutrition science minors, and so many more. I have class in the Marshall School of Business 2 days out of the week, so it’s nice to mix up my schedule a little.

The last class I’m taking is Probability & Statistics, which is a class taught by the EE department. I’ll be learning Matlab as part of my professor’s curriculum, and we’ll be covering topics including Introduction to concepts of randomness and uncertainty: probability, random variables, statistics. It should be a pretty interesting class – I really enjoy this kind of math, so I’m looking forward to it. It may be a challenge to get acclimated to Matlab since it’s not a software that is emphasized in the computer science curriculum. I’ll keep you guys updated on how all of my classes go 🙂

Wishing you guys all a happy start to school as well!
