One of my favorite activities at USC is the Professional Cinema Fraternity of which I am a part, Delta Kappa Alpha (DKA).  DKA focuses on the professional aspects of cinema while also creating lasting bonds with other students who share a common interest in film.  For me, DKA has become a way to become more involved in cinema, outside of my minor in Cinematic Arts.  This week, we are recruiting new members to DKA.  It is my first time going through rush while in the fraternity, and I am very excited to meet new potential members!  Last night, we had our second event of rush – Speed Dating (I missed our BBQ Event since I was at VSA Retreat!) !  This is my favorite night of rush because it consists of Active members of the fraternity asking the potential members questions that they answer.  Some examples of questions are: “What two genres of film would you want to blend, and what would your movie within that drama be about?”, “What is your most irrational fear?”, and “Why are you interested in joining DKA?”.  I really enjoy it because it is the night when I get to meet the most people and get to understand them a little better.

Tonight, we are going to Golf N Stuff to go go-karting and play mini golf!  I’m looking forward to being able to have a relaxed night, because today I gave a 7 minute presentation in my Writing 340 class.  This is the last event that is open to everyone – the coming events are invite only.  These events include a film-themed Blue Chip dinner, interviews, and then bid night!

Once the rush process is over, I’m looking forward to a new group of people joining our house.  I really love DKA because it expanded my network of friends while also giving me the opportunity to get more involved in film.  Through DKA, I have been able to hear from industry professionals, I have worked on numerous student films, I have participated in philanthropy events to bring film to kids in local schools, and I have made lasting friendships.  It is an amazing organization, and I am thrilled to be a part of it.

DKA is very different from my social sorority, Alpha Delta Pi.  Both of them are very special to me, and have provided me with numerous opportunities to grow as a person.  DKA is focused more on the professional aspect of greek life, and is more of a common interest group, while ADPi is more centered on social sisterhood.  Either way, Greek life is, in my opinion, an excellent way to supplement studies.  It is in no way necessary to have a good time at USC, as only a small percentage of students at USC actually participate in Greek Life, but it has definitely been a great option for me.
