For me, one of the club organizations that I have come to enjoy being part of is the VEX Robotics team. This is a design team where we compete against other teams from both around Southern California to across the world. Each year, there is a different game design challenge that we design to. This allows us to set goals throughout the year, while tackling new problems that could be related to real world problems.

Click Here to take a quick look at the game and the rules! But the general idea of the game is to stack cones and deliver that stacked pile into different zones that have their own obstacles to go over. Now, to me, I thought this was a very simplified game that I would not enjoy. But after talking with one of my professors about this year’s game, I noticed the importance of the simplistic routine of stacking. He talked to me about how currently, NASA is using similar motions of stacking for different tasks to be completed out in orbit. Now, although one version is a very simplified version, it still allows us to understand mechanisms that could become important once we go out into the workforce.
This is what I value the most about organizations outside of the classroom setting. They allow you to work with other engineering students, learning and growing, in a way that will better prepare you for when you begin to work for different companies after graduation. This is why I highly recommend getting involved once on campus!

Our first competition is on October 28th, so head on over to Howard Hughes Electrical Engineering building (EEB) 132 at USC to check it out!I will post an update with some videos from the competition, so stay tuned![/cs_text][/cs_column][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/5″ style=”padding: 0px;”][x_custom_headline level=”h5″ looks_like=”h5″ accent=”false” class=”cs-ta-center” style=”color: hsl(0, 95%, 18%);”]About the Author[/x_custom_headline][x_image type=”circle” src=”https://viterbivoices.usc.edu/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/Headshot_photo-e1506475201889.jpg” alt=”” link=”true” href=”https://viterbivoices.usc.edu/author/ramiro/” title=”” target=”blank” info=”popover” info_place=”bottom” info_trigger=”hover” info_content=”Ramiro Aerospace Engineering ’19”][cs_text class=”cs-ta-center”]Ramiro is a junior studying Aerospace Engineering.
