This weekend I had the great opportunity to attend the 2013 Regional Leadership Development Conference in Tempe, Arizona at Arizona State University. It is one of 3 annual conferences held by SHPE National to develop leaders within the individual chapters.
I got the opportunity to meet the Executives from the National Organization of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers and it was very inspirational being around many accomplished individuals. I interacted with SHPE members from Arizona State University, University of Arizona, Cal State Long Beach, Cal Poly Pomona, UCLA, and UC Riverside, UC Irvine, and UC San Diego. There was a good mix of all the Universities in the region and everyone learned from each other.
We attended several workshops that taught us how to strengthen our resumes, what good business etiquette meant, basic principles of project management, communication skills, and important tips for people pursuing graduate school. We also each got a Case Study where we got in groups and solved a problem by being innovative.
The conference was great and I feel very prepared to be a productive member of the 2013-2014 Executive Board of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. I learned a great deal from the workshops and the people I had an opportunity to interact with. The 6 hour travel to Arizona was worth it.
Thanks for reading, Fight On!
