Welcome back Trojans! And welcome to all new Trojans as well! The beginning of the year is always rich with excitement and reconnecting with friends. The first few weeks of school have seen some of my best experiences thus far at USC, and will always get me excited to return from whatever I’ve been doing the past summer (although the picture below might show my excitement for returning back home for a bit…).
I’d encourage everyone, not just Freshman, to try and maintain that same spirit that I know all Freshman have when the come here, the energy and excitement that creates an amazing beginning of the year, start of classes, and, last but definitely not least, football season.
My first week at USC was almost completely reconnecting with friends from last year, and meeting some new. This period is a great time to branch out and meet even more amazing people, which aren’t hard to find at all at USC.
Meanwhile, I’ve also reconnected with my flying habits down in SoCal. Over the weekend, I went through a checkout (a flight “test” of sorts that allows you to fly new airplanes in new locations) out of Torrance Field. I flew in a “Sling” aircraft, manufactured in South Africa. The Sling is a 2-seat, low-wing, fuel injected 4 cylinder Light Sport Aircraft, and it’s one of the most exciting airplanes I’ve flown to date.
Because the airplane is very light, the controls are ultra-responsive, and you can really fly the airplane exactly where you want it to be without much control input at all. Although this took some getting used to – and some unnecessarily hard turns – I am really enjoying flying the Sling and using it to explore more of Southern California. Look for some possible trips in my upcoming blogs. (Or, if you’re feeling lucky, comment where you’d like me to fly.)
Of course, getting back up to speed this last week has been hectic, but it’s just the beginning of something new. The memories and experiences of last year are starting to give way to new adventures, and the excitement shows no signs of stopping.
Fight On.
