From Summer to Fall: Transitioning into a New Semester!

Hello everyone! This summer has positively sped by, and already I’m seeing myself back at USC in the middle of another exciting semester. Though this summer has been one of the most eventful summers I’ve had in a long time, I am thrilled to be back at USC! Distance definitely makes the heart grow fonder!

As some of you may now, I was interning at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in the Microdevices Lab. Before I knew it, I wrapped up my project on infrared photodetectors and it was time to go back to school. I have so many great memories at JPL and I learned so much within a short 10 weeks. This internship was an amazing experience, and I’m so glad I got to participate in this opportunity!

Thankfully, USC is only a short drive away from Pasadena, and two days before school started I moved into my apartment. It was strange moving in by myself without the help of my parents, and even more strange that I wasn’t moving into a dorm! I’m currently living in Cardinal Gardens, which is a USC Housing apartment complex just across the street from campus (it’s also across the street from the Lyon Center, which gives me more motivation to be healthier!). It’s a new experience, and very different from living in a residential dorm, but it feels like home already! It’s especially great when you’re living with close friends who love to decorate! 🙂

After I moved in, I started the school year off right by going to see a Taylor Swift concert! One of my favorite parts of living in the heart of LA is that impromptu decisions to go to an amazing show are possible! All the best shows are only a five minute drive away at the Staples Center. Last year I went to the Demi Lovato World Tour, and I decided to keep the tradition! Attending a concert at the Staples Center is a must- there’s nothing that makes me happier or more energized than going to see one of my favorite artists with some of my closest friends! Going to the 1989 Tour was a very cool way to start off my second year at USC!

Back to school also means back to classes. Lectures, discussions, and labs galore! This semester focuses on math and science for me: I’m currently taking the perfect engineering trio of math, physics (electricity and magnetism), and chemistry. My days will be filled with poring over textbooks and doing massive amounts of practice problems, but I also have some more diverse classes to keep things lively!

I’m also taking a general education course of Jewish History, and to help me relax after a hectic day, I’m taking International Ballroom Dancing! This class is so much fun, especially when you’re with all your friends. Below is a picture of Dress-Up Day, after we concluded learning the foxtrot! I would highly recommend taking a fun class like ballroom dancing, since it really leaves me relaxed and happy after a long day of classes, office hours, and labs! And, it doesn’t hurt that we get an excuse to dress up once in a while!

This semester is definitely going to be extremely busy, but I’m looking forward to getting back into a routine! It has only been three weeks, and already there are events popping up all over campus, and I’m really excited to get back to my favorite organizations on campus. It’s been wonderful getting back into the swing of things, and I’m looking forward to seeing what this new semester will bring! Until next time, fight on!
