This semester, I had one extra unit to spare so I decided to take a tennis class with my two roommates. This could possible be the best decision I’ve made in my college career. Or at least one of them.

Every Tuesday and Thursday, my roommates and I sleep in until about 9, eat breakfast, and then head to the gym around 10. We’ll either hit the spin room or go for a run around campus—just to get a light workout in before tennis class begins. Then we’ll walk over to the courts together to meet our coach. He usually gives us a ten minute tutorial on a technique, like serves or backhands. Then we split off into courts. My roommates and I discovered the Athletics Courts, which are located behind the regular courts. Our secret spot has special covering to make running easier on your knees. Most kids don’t venture away from the normal courts, so we end up getting the whole area to ourselves.

We’ll start the class with warm-ups—just hitting back and forth. Coach will check in on us and help us with problem areas. Then we work on serves, and finish up with round robin games. There’s of course lots of chatting in between, and occasionally picking up balls that somehow wound up outside the court. We always have a great time, and then head back to my sorority house for lunch after.

I definitely recommend taking at least one sports class during your time as a college student—it’s a great way to relieve stress and get a work out in with a group!
