Free Events Around Campus: Visions & Visions

Maria Campus Events, Maria, Viterbi Plus Leave a Comment

Like most people, I love free things. Visions & Voices is a university wide arts and humanities initiative that understands me, and sends me a weekly newsletter full of entirely free cultural opportunities. I wake up Monday mornings and scan through about ten or eleven interesting events and RSVP to the ones I have time for and am interested in. I’ve yet to be disappointed by an event, no matter how off the wall it initially seemed to me, and Visions & Voices is a really great, convenient, and free way to expand your horizons.

My first Visions & Voices was a spoken word performance when I first arrived to USC. It took place on campus in the Bovard Auditorium, and featured poetry on discrimination and sexism in really creative ways. This was one event that totally blew me away and exceeded my expectations entirely.

I can never decide if I want to stare in awe at the art or the architecture

I also attended the world-famous Getty Center through Visions & Voices during the WWI propaganda exhibit. We left campus at noon and returned at 4 pm in time for my next class, which made for cool lunch plans.

Honestly kind of weird to see her talk in person instead of whisper in my ears during work

Yesterday I actually attended the event Binge-Worthy Journalism: Backstage with the Creators of Serial, Sarah Koenig and Julie Snyder. For context, Serial is one of my favorite podcasts about unraveling a legal case, and the podcast is the fastest to reach 5 million downloads on iTunes in history. It was such a fun way to spend a Friday night.

So whether you’re looking for Our Environmental Destiny: An Evening with Robert Kennedy Jr., or Rolling the R’s: Literary Revolutions in the Asian Pacific Diaspora, or anything in between, Visions & Voices is the organization for you!
