Midterm season is in full swing. Starbucks is packed, every outlet in the library is taken, and my backpack is getting heavier. After surviving my three midterms last week in design of steel structures, theory of structures, and fluid mechanics, there is a lot that I am looking forward to this coming week, and not a single midterm in sight!  To start this week off, I had a Society of Women Engineers officer council brunch this morning to welcome our new ambassadors to the organization. We all have such busy schedules and are involved in so many other organizations that it is really nice to just stop everything and hang out every once in awhile – the free food was also a plus!

Next on my agenda for the week is VINE (Viterbi Industry Networking Event) on Tuesday night. This is my first year attending because the event is only open to upperclassmen. But I am really looking forward to a much more casual atmosphere and the opportunity to network with companies such as Eaton Corporation, Halliburton and Southern California Edison. After my night of networking, I get to look forward to more networking! Wednesday is the official Viterbi School of Engineering Career Expo. With over a hundred companies in attendance, who all looking to hire engineering students for jobs or internships, this fair is a great way to meet recruiters and get acquainted with the companies. I went last year as a sophomore and was able to gain a lot experience (and confidence) talking with companies. Now I am back this year as a veteran with internship experience under my belt and my elevator pitch fully prepped. So Viterbi Career Expo, bring it on!

That night, after the career expo, SWE is holding Fall Evening with the Industry, yet another fantastic opportunity to get one on one time with recruiters. Last year I talked with a rep from Kiewit Building Group over dinner and later conversed with a Turner Construction representative over desert.

After Wednesday night though, I am turning in business casual attire and elevator speech for a USC game day shirt and SoCal spell-out, IT’S GAME DAY! Normally games are on Saturdays but this week we are playing Arizona on Thursday night at the Coliseum. This actually works out perfectly because Friday morning I am leaving to go back home to Austin, Texas for Austin City Limits. One of my favorite traditions growing up in Austin is going to ACL, a music festival that occurs every fall. The last two years I haven’t had the chance to go back home but this year, after saving up my money from my internship and making sure that I did not have any midterm conflicts, I am going! I can’t wait to go back home and see my parents and dogs, eat great food and listen to great music.

It is definitely going to be a long week but I am really looking forward to everything!
