This summer I changed gears a little bit from chemical engineering and interned at Accenture- a technology consulting company. Before this summer I didn’t really understand what consulting was, and after this summer it is still really hard to explain. Basically though other companies hire our company to fix their technology related problems!
I spent the summer in Norwalk, California working with LA County to help design a new system for determining welfare eligibility. My team was the technical architecture team, and we were responsible for coordinating the connection between the user interface and application and the various products and services that were being called on.
Before this summer, I had no experience with coding, and I learned an entirely new language- Java! I wrote tests to make sure all the code my team wrote worked before we sent it out to other teams to use! It was a great way to learn how coding worked and also ensure a quality product for the project!
I loved my experience here this summer. Not only did i learn a lot and contribute to a meaningful project, I also got to meet some awesome people. There were 5 other interns on the project and we became super close, and we also got to do a variety of activities like a golf tournament, intern bowling night, a project BBQ, and much more! Everyone I met was so helpful and willing to help me learn and improve. I built an awesome network of professionals and friends.
One of the best parts was a weekend Student Leadership Conference in St. Charles, IL. All the interns from around the country and Canada came for a weekend of networking and leadership training. We had some incredible speakers that really inspired me to grow as a leader, and meeting the other interns was extremely valuable. Everyone was on such different types of projects and doing such interesting work. My team was also by far the coolest (I’m probably biased) and we were Team Orange: The New Black.
I loved my summer here and I can’t wait to see where my career goes from here!
