Freshmen year I lived in Birnkrant Residence Hall, and in my opinion, it’s definitely the best dorm on campus! Birnkrant (or BK lounge as I liked to call it) has traditional style coed dorms with common bathrooms on each floor. The majority of rooms are doubles, but there are also singles and triples that offer even more space and storage than the average double dorm room.
I lived in one of the traditional double rooms with a girl who I found on Facebook last minute, but things worked out better than I could have expected. My roommate and I got along great and even managed to keep our dorm clean (although that’s probably because of all the storage…). I especially loved my huge windows looking out over McCarthy Quad. And as an added bonus, I also lived right above Trojan Grounds (TroGro for short), so a midnight snack was never far away if I didn’t feel like going to EVK dining hall, which is also right next to Birnkrant.

Another great perk about Birnkrant is that it is a Residence College, which means a faculty member lived in an adjoining apartment and our RA’s received extra funding to plan cool trips around LA. Freshmen year I enjoyed many free sushi and frozen yogurt trips, as well as discounted Disneyland tickets!
Besides the events the RA’s put on for us, I also had so much fun hanging out and exploring LA with friends I met on my hall. One of my favorite memories from freshmen year was going to Coachella and staying at a friend’s house just a mile from the polo fields!
Since living in Birnkrant in 2008-2009, Birnkrant has now been named an official honors dorm, however, if you are on scholarship, you should definitely check Birnkrant out!
