I can’t believe I’m already into my second week of my second semester as a junior! It is crazy how quickly time flies at college.
After a busy fall semester and finals week, it was really nice to head home to Colorado for a few weeks. It’s always wonderful to go back home for break because not only do I get to see my family and friends, but I get to enjoy a change of weather and scenery. This winter break was quite a cold one, with almost non-stop snow and really low temperatures!
Because there was so much snow on all the roads, it was hard to drive places so I mostly spent my time in my hometown in Littleton. One of my favorite things I did over break was the annual gingerbread house making party at my friend’s house. I’ve gone every winter break since high school, and it’s always fun competing to make the prettiest house. I might get a little too competitive since I have to make models for my building science classes!
I also really enjoyed spending Christmas with my family. Every year I look forward to having a White Christmas, and this year we had one. To me, Christmas is incomplete unless there is plenty of snow outside!
The final highlight of my break was going on a cruise to Mexico! My boyfriend and I went on a three day cruise that went from Los Angeles to Ensenada and back to Los Angeles. I had never been on a cruise before, so we took advantage of all the boat had to offer. Besides eating way too much of all the delicious unlimited food, we enjoyed bingo, karaoke, pool volleyball, and shows in the theatre. We also got to spend one day in Ensenada, where we visited the town and “La Bufadora,” which is one of the largest blowholes in North America.
Now that I am back at school, I’m looking forward to a busy semester. I’m taking the following classes this semester: CE 457 -Reinforced Concrete Design, CE 467 – Geotechnical Engineering, CE 458 – Theory of Structures II, ARCH 305b – Building Science II, and GEOL 305 – Introduction to Engineering Geology. The class I’m most looking forward to is my building science class. Similar to last semester, we are in teams designing a building both structurally and architecturally all semester long. However, this semester we have to design a two story commercial building. My group decided on a community arts center, and currently we are in the early stages of the design!
Besides classes, I’m also looking forward to the ice hockey tournament in April. Once again we are traveling to Las Vegas to compete, and I’m looking forward to playing a lot of games and getting to hangout with the team (including Ellen)! I’m also looking forward to pouring the concrete canoe for ASCE in just a few weeks. And finally, I’m hoping on fitting in a lot more hiking this semester. I’ve managed to fit in a hike the past two weekends so hopefully I can keep the trend up!
