This past Saturday, I got to spend the day at Dockweiler Beach, which is about 20 mins from USC. I had never been to Dockweiler, so getting to spend the day out by the water was really relaxing!
As the social chair for the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), it is my job to plan fun events so that our members can get to know each other better! For Beach Day, I decided to team up with the social chairs of UCLA and CSULB to make it a multi-school event. In April, PSWC takes place which is a big competition between 15 different student chapters of ASCE (click here to learn more about PSWC). Because UCLA and CSULB will both be at PSWC, this event allowed our members to get to know not only each other, but make friends from other schools so that we can all hang out at PSWC!
The coolest thing about Dockweiler is it is the only beach in the Los Angeles area that allows bonfires! All you have to do is bring wood and a way to start a fire, and easy enough you can get a nice bonfire going!
We spent the afternoon playing sports on the beach, like volleyball, football, frisbee, and soccer. Surprisingly, there are multiple sports competitions at PSWC so all three schools wanted to get some practice in.
After the sun went down, we got the bonfire going so we could cook! We had plenty of hotdogs and s’mores, so we all sat around the bonfire cooking dinner and chatting. After a busy semester, getting to relax at the beach was really nice!
We are hoping to have more events with other schools in the future, because it is really cool getting to know all the people studying civil engineering around Los Angeles! The next few weeks we will be focusing on getting ready to PSWC by finishing up our designs and practicing for the big competition!
