Hey everyone! Looking back on my semester, one of my favorite parts was my participation in philanthropies on Fridays. I played beach volleyball, was pied with whip cream, and even distributed books to children. These all supported great causes and were lots of fun! I wanted to share some of those experiences with you.

As a member of Pi Beta Phi, my sorority supports a literacy foundation. We do this in several ways. For one, we read to Kindergarten students on Friday mornings through our program CAR (Champions are Readers). We carpool girls over to a nearby elementary school and get to bond with all of the excited kids. It is truly a rewarding experience. Another event Pi Phi hosts is a philanthropy called Arrowspike, where all of the proceeds go towards supporting our literacy foundation. This is a beach volleyball tournament in which the fraternities compete with one another for the championship title. It is a fun way to bring about awareness for a meaningful cause.

Every year, Pi Phi nationals hosts an event called Fraternity Day of Service. This year it was held in Long Beach and a group of my sisters and I sorted and distributed books to children. They also brought dogs from the Bark Organization. These are trained dogs who sit with children while they read to make them feel more comfortable. I hope I can attend this same event next year!

The most recent Pi Phi philanthropy that I attended was Pi Social. This event consists of an American themed buffet, t-shirt sales, line dancing, pie eating contests, and pie-ing the sorority members. Knowing that each pie bought was going towards our literacy program made it worth the three pies to the face. It was great to see such a great turnout this year!

Not only have I attended my sorority’s philanthropic events, but I have also participated in other organizations’ philanthropies. This last Friday, I went to Manhattan Beach to participate in a beach volleyball tournament called Sets on the Beach, which raised money for Alpha Epsilon Pi’s charity foundation. A similar volleyball philanthropy I attended was Zeta Beta Tau’s Jungle Ball event. It was fun to give back to a cause while playing my favorite sport!

These are just some examples of the many philanthropic events I have attended this semester. I always look forward to my Fridays knowing such fun and rewarding events will be taking place. I cannot wait to participate in Fiji’s Water Wars this coming Friday and play in a water balloon dodge ball competition, while raising awareness for Autism. Have a great weekend!  Fight on!
