While giving a tour to prospective students, I received an excellent question: “We have one day left in LA. What should we do?”

Step 1: brunch at Best Fish Taco in Ensenada

This place is cheap, fast, and delicious. In my opinion it represents the best of the Los Angeles food scene, and it’s one of my favorite places to eat.

Step 2: shop at the Santa Monica’s 3rd Street Promenade

The 3rd Street Promenade

Even if you’re dirt poor, the Santa Monica Promenade is a beautiful and fun place to walk around and window shop. I believe that it’s representative of a lot of the West End of Los Angeles. Don’t forget to ride the ferris wheel at the Pier.

Step 3: walk around Venice Beach

Venice Beach is an eccentric Angelino beach community: street performers, gentrified beach goers, and everything in between. Make sure you walk around the canals to get a feeling for why they call it ‘Venice’ beach.

Step 4: dinner and sunset in Manhattan Beach

My favorite beach in Los Angeles. Plenty of fun pizza parlors to poke your head into for a quick bite to bring down to the beach and watch an LA sunset.

That’s what I would do with a free day in Los Angeles, anyways.
