ASBME, SWE, Engineers Without Borders, SC Racing. These are all great organizations for engineers. And yet, I’m not currently involved in any of these. It isn’t because I don’t like being an engineer or because I don’t think that they’re worthwhile organizations. They absolutely are. But part of the fun in extracurricular activities is that they can be absolutely random and unrelated to your major.

My high school literary magazine

Something I did during high school that I wanted to continue was that I worked on my school literary magazine. While it had elements of graphic design in creating the layout of the book, it was mostly about creative (specifically short story) writing. Does writing have anything to do practically with engineering? Not at all. But I love it. I’m an engineer by day, novelist by in-between parts of the day.

I know engineers who are musical in their spare time and engineers who are amazing artists. On paper, activities don’t like this don’t really seem like they make people better engineers. Maybe they do, maybe they don’t. Either way I don’t think it matters, because extracurricular shouldn’t be just for a resume, they should be for you.
