Coming in to USC I knew absolutely no one- although that didn’t last very long after attending Welcome week and the Viterbi Luau. The Viterbi Luau is where I was first introduced to my second family, The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). NSBE is an organization whose mission is “increase the number of culturally responsible Black Engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community.” I joined NSBE my freshman year not knowing what to expect from the org, but knowing that it was one I wanted to be a part of. I quickly learned of what NSBE really is and got a taste of what they do after attending the Fall Regional Conference during my first semester.

Women in Viterbi

Since being a part of NSBE, I have gotten a chance to know some amazing people who I am lucky enough to call friends, and who I can go to for anything- whether its for help on an assignment, or wanting to go see a movie. NSBE allows me to feel at home without actually being at home, and that is why I love being involved in the org! After my freshman year, I decided to get more involved and became secretary, where I handled anything from event space reservations, to submitting reports to Viterbi. Next year I will be returning to the Executive board as Treasurer and am excited for the responsibility and opportunities it holds!
