Meet Daisy

Environmental Engineering
Class of ’17

Hey, I’m Daisy from Dallas, TX and welcome to my student page! I am currently a senior majoring in Environmental Engineering and will be pursuing a M.S. in Green Technologies next fall through Viterbi’s Progressive Degree Program. Throughout my time at USC I have been heavily involved with the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), and am serving as the current chapter President. During the school year I work as an educational presenter at the California Science Center where I teach elementary school students about all the wonders of science. This summer I interned with Ramboll Environ, a top environmental engineering consulting firm, where I helped to monitor the SoCal air quality. Some of my favorite things to do in LA are go to concerts with friends, hang out at the beach, and try new foods! Scroll down to learn more about my #ViterbiLife !

This summer I interned with Ramboll Environ, an environmental consulting firm, in Downtown Los Angeles! I worked in the air quality department where we helped to monitor air emissions from several different industries and proposed different ways to reduce emissions and increase sustainability. It was such a great time that I will be returning next summer as a full-time employee!
This year I am the president of the SHPE chapter at USC! SHPE is a national organization dedicated to advancing the careers of Hispanics in STEM fields. At USC we host events for students for professional, academic, and leadership development as well as multiple community outreach events. It is an organization which has made me feel at home since my first day here!
During the school year I have a work-study job across the street as an educational presenter at the California Science Center museum. I absolutely love going to work and helping to inspire the next generation of STEM students. I also get really cool perks like free IMAX movies, access to special exhibits early, and I get to see the space shuttle Endeavor everyday. If you have not checked it out yet, please do! It’s free!

My Major at USC: Environmental Engineering

My Favorite Classes
I took this class last spring and it was so interesting! I was able to understand how pollutants such a particulate matter, SOx, and NOx, travel in the air and how engineers can better design for these emissions to avoid public harm. Additionally, this was very usueful for my summer internship!
This semester I am taking my first water treatment design course and I am learning so much! Our group is tasked with designing a full-scale water treatment plant by the end of the semester. Aside from in class lectures, we have taken trips to local treatment plants such as the Santa Monica Water Treatment plant to see how our designs may look like in real life!

My Tips for You

Application Essays

I thought of my college essay as a sort of personal narrative. Try it out, and maybe you’ll realize that writing the essay becomes enjoyable rather than a chore! Also, don’t overthink the short answer section. They’re not trick questions!

Application Extracurriculars

Don’t feel pressured to list every last extracurricular activity you’ve ever remotely been involved in. It’s totally cool just to talk about the few things you’re most interested in.

Two Truths and a Lie

Can you guess which of these are true or false?
True! I do not have a car and do not feel like I need one. I enjoy taking the bus to downtown LA, or hopping on the metro to Santa Monica!
True! The idea of eating raw fish was slightly strange for me but once I moved to LA I knew I had to try it. Now, it is one of my favorite foods to eat!
False! I actually applied to USC as a chemical engineering major but switched at orientation when I learned more about Viterbi’s environmental engineering program. It was an easy switch and I have loved EnE ever since!

My Favorite Shows

  • Parks and Recreation is a classic for me! It’s funny, witty, and each episode is  short enough to help me relax a little in between classes or homework sets!

  • Probably one of my favorite shows on TV right now! It’s fun, lighthearted, and actually got me into the superhero scene! Next stop, Comic-Con in San Diego?

  • The Office never fails to make me laugh out loud. I’ll be honest, I cried a little when *SPOILER ALERT* Jim and Pam got married and when Michael had to leave 🙁 Nevertheless, definitely one of my favorites!
