Industrial and Systems Engineering
Class of ’19

Hey everyone! I’m Clare and I’m majoring in Industrial and Systems Engineering on the Information Systems track with a minor in Chinese for the Professions. Within Viterbi, I’m a part of some really cool organizations. Through the Viterbi Fellows Program, I’ve been able to do research with the school of environmental engineering researching the global implications of the Fukushima disaster and BP oil spill. I’m also part of a club called Engineers Without Borders, where I sit on the fundraising committee. I also am a part of USC’s chapter of Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers where I am VP of Communications. Outside of Viterbi, I am part of a social sorority Alpha Delta Pi where I am Cultural Chair, and am a competitive equestrian!  I love game days, studying in the engineering quad, exploring southern California, and I can’t wait for the next couple years here at USC. Fight on!

My Favorite Places in LA

I am part of a social sorority: Alpha Delta Pi. ADPi has been an amazing way to meet amazing people. I truly have met sisters for life, and love the network of motivated and intelligent women I have met!
Society of Women Engineers is a program that helps women achieve their full potential in the world of engineering. Through SWE, I am a mentor for high school female students!
Engineers Without Borders is a club that combines philanthropy with engineering. I am part of the fundraising committee which means I help raise money for both the domestic and international projects we are working on!

My Major at USC: Industrial and Systems Engineering

My Favorite Classes
This is one of the most fun and rewarding classes I have taken at USC. We learn decision analysis and probability concepts from a man who has worked with the government and major corporations. Maybe finally I can win in Vegas!
This is actually a class for my minor! In this class we team up with companies that are primarily Chinese speaking and intern with them for a semester. They offer internships in so many different fields!

My Tips for You

Don’t make your entire life about your grades and test scores. While grades are important and all, you won’t succeed if all you do is get good grades! Make time for things that you are passionate about, and your college application will be so much better!

Helpful Reminders

Regardless of where a college might stand on your list, take your time with every application. You never know how things will end up in the end, and putting your best foot forward makes hitting the submit button much less stressful.

Two Truths and a Lie

Can you guess which of these are true or false?
True! I actually got into USC as an Environmental Engineering major. But, with the amazing help of the Viterbi academic counseling, I was able to realize ISE was the right path for me!
True! Due to a reconstructive jaw surgery (and 16 years of braces), I have no feeling in my face, puts a whole new meaning to “I can’t feel my face when I’m with you”
False! I only have six siblings. Being from such a big family made the transition to college hard, but with a place like Viterbi, I’ve been able to find my home away from home.

My Favorite Shows

  • I was definitely one of those people that binge watched Stranger Things, and it still to date is one of my favorite shows!

  • While I sadly won’t work in the ER as an ISE major, I do love greys anatomy. I miss Derek Shepherd though, Shonda send him back!

  • This is probably the best television show to ever be created. I laugh so hard I cried probably over 100 times.
