There are so many things to get involved in outside of engineering at USC. Even though I love my #ViterbiOrgs, it’s important to be involved in things outside your major to broaden your horizons, and the atmosphere at USC is very conducive to that mindset. Some of my favorite involvements are: SC Outfitters, an outdoors and hiking club; PAWS, an animal volunteer group, and especially Gamma Phi Beta, my social sorority.
A lot of people think that engineers live in the library and don’t have a social life, but in my experience, that’s not true at all. My favorite thing to do outside of engineering is spend time with my sorority sisters. In between classes and organization meetings, I usually go to Gamma Phi to eat lunch/dinner and hang out. There are almost 60 girls that live in the house and over 200 in the entire sorority, so there is always someone studying in the dining room, watching Netflix in bed, or napping on the couch. This past week, we all watched Halloweentown, carved pumpkins, and binged on candy together, and in 2 weeks we’re all going on an overnight retreat in Bel-Air where we’ll be watching movies, doing yoga, and crafting (of course).
Greek life at SC isn’t just limited to social sororities like Gamma Phi Beta. There are also professional and honors fraternities like the pre-med, pre-law, and business fraternities. I’m in Alpha Lambda Delta, which is an honors fraternity, and my roommate is in Phi Alpha Delta, a pre-law fraternity. In ALD, there are study sessions and ice cream socials, so students can meet other high achieving students as well as collaborate with each other on projects and before tests. Other types of Greek life include Asian and Latino fraternities/sororities that allow students of the same ethnicity to meet each other and socialize.
My experience with Greek life at USC has been great. There are so many different types of sororities and fraternities that you can get involved in that look great on your resume. Because I’m at Gamma Phi all the time, I post a lot of pictures of what I do there and with my sisters so check out my Instagram (@jamisonbria) if you want to see more! Also check out my other blogs if you want to see the other organizations (Viterbi and non-Viterbi) that I like to stay involved in!
