My freshman year at USC was an incredible experience, transition, and memorable, and I thought it couldn’t get any better, but I was wrong. Freshman year is a time of transition, finding your self, pushing limits, and exploring your environment. While it was still an incredible year for me, there are still a few things I wish people had told me before I jumped into one of the greatest times of my life.
1. “Netflix can wait” : Trust me, if I am saying this, it must be true. While all that new free time you have in college might be tempting to just sit in bed by yourself and binge watch Breaking Bad or Friends, get outside! Meet new people! Grab some floor mates and go to the dining hall together. Or, if you really need your TV fix, invite some people over to watch some of your favorite shows. You mosts likely are starting at the bottom of the college totem pole and its even harder because you were probably just the top dog in high school, but you need to realize that you have a blank slate, don’t just stay inside, get out there and put yourself out there to climb back up that ladder of success.
2. “Don’t think upperclassmen can’t be your friends” : When I first started at USC, I was terrified of upperclassmen. I thought that they thought I was just some helpless child invading their school, but sophomore year I started meeting students that were older than me and it has been one of the most helpful things I’ve done. They know what classes to take, what professors to get, what places to eat around campus, and even the best spots to live. Don’t think you are just limited to socializing with freshmen, upperclassmen want to get to know you too!
3. “Get off campus” : While campus itself is already and incredible place to be, if you’re at USC, you are in one of the greatest cities in the world! Check out the culture and great eats of downtown LA, or just go down hoover a couple miles and try the famous King Taco (I’m writing this blog during lunch, so King Taco was what sounded most appealing at the moment). The LA Metro is right outside of campus, and it can take you anywhere in LA for only $1.75!
Overall, your freshman year will be one of the most exciting years of your life. You will learn so much about people, about yourself, and about your environment, and it will only be just the beginning!
