All we do as engineers is homework, right? Wrong! We do so much outside of the classroom both inside and outside of Viterbi. Work inside the classroom has hardly defined my college life. Within Viterbi, I’ve been involved with Engineers Without Borders, the Rocket Propulsion Lab, and working for Viterbi during the summer as an orientation advisor. Outside Viterbi, I’ve also been pretty involved. I’ve been on the marathon team since my freshman year and I have run two marathons! My sophomore year I was involved in Peer Health Exchange, where I taught high school freshman health education, and this year I’m volunteering for Iridescent, a non-profit that teaches children and their families about science and engineering. I’m also involved in Greek Life here at USC. Outside of school, I love exploring LA, going to the beach, going hiking, seeing movies, and being with my friends and family.
This past weekend, I was in Black Rock Nevada with the Rocket Propulsion Lab. Every year, RPL travels to an event called Balls, which is one of the largest gatherings of non-professional rocket enthusiasts. It was so much fun, and a great experience. I got to see so many rocket launches in one weekend. We also went to Lake Tahoe for one night! I got to see many parts of the country I had never seen before on the longgggg car drive.
On Friday, Engineers Without Borders did a special event with Habitat for Humanity. We went to a location in Lynwood California, and helped build and paint a house for people in need. We partnered with another EWB organization from California State University Long Beach. It was a neat opportunity to give back to our community.
The marathon team has been a great experience. I’m still debating if I am going to participate this year, but I’m so glad I was a part of the team both my freshman and sophomore year. It is such a great accomplishment to have run two marathons and it’s something I will never forget. I’m hoping to do the Chicago marathon sometime in the future!
Well that’s only some of the things I do outside the classroom, but check out the other Viterbi Voices to see what other Viterbi Students do!
