First of all check out that sunrise! That is literally from my bedroom window. After being abroad last semester in Australia, I am now SOSOSOSOOOO stoked to be back at USC. I had a great winter break and ended up traveling around Europe with some high school friends (definitely got the travel bug after Australia).

I am most excited to jump back into my classes and clubs which I was really missing abroad. I am taking five classes this semester: Software Programming, Facilities and Logistics, Human/Computer Interaction, Calculus 3, and Writing for Engineers. I’m most nervous about my Writing class and my Computer Science classes because both require a lot of time for projects/essays. In Software Programming I am finally transferring all my object-oriented and data structure knowledge from C++ to Java.

I just turned in my first assignment for computer science which basically was spell check. It took in 3 input files: a dictionary, a list of all the keys on a keyboard and the surrounding ones, and then a paragraph. First I found all the words spelled wrong, and then generated possibilities for what the word could be based on the surrounding keyboard keys.

I also joined two new organizations this semester. The first is LavaLab which is an entrepreneur club that puts you in groups of people from different majors that share a common interest and throughout the semester you design and make a product. I am really really excited to apply my engineering skills to something outside of class. I also joined JEP (Joint Educational Program) that partners students with local LA schools. I’ll be teaching Computer Science to a class of elementary school students as well as doing after school math tutoring. It’s a really great way to give back to the community in a way that is directly applicable to what you are learning in school. I haven’t received my school assignment yet but I’m stoked meet the kids.

In addition to JEP and LavaLab I am still involved in SC Racing and Ultimate Frisbee. I’m in for a challenging but very rewarding semester!
