The Defiant Ones.
No this post is not about being an angsty teenager rebelling against their parents. This is about the television series about Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine.
I think the first thing this blog will address is the lie they feed you about how the right and left side of the brain are separated and no person can utilize both.
You begin to look at music now and you see the engineering behind the beats, the lyrics, and everything that makes music so amazing to us.
Then that got me interested. What makes music so appealing to us. Then I stumbled upon an article, this one written by Vox, called “Why we really, really, really like repetition in music.” This video goes into analyzing the repetition of popular songs ranging from Ribs from Lorde to Cut to the Feeling by Carly Rae Jepsen.
They noted a very interesting website called Songsim which takes lyrics and analyzes the repetition of the hooks and chorus to create a mapped out graphic showing the linkages.
These two images show two different songs. One by Lorde that consists of slight repetition, but shows the linkages behind the lyrics with a diagonal structure. Then you have Happy by Pharrell Williams that I think most of us know. I know the jingle of “Because I’m Happy” is racing through your minds.
While this is running through your mind, realize that the intersection of art and engineering is honestly in every aspect. While I might have played out this music aspect greatly, think about your spotify playlist of Discover Weekly.
How does a computer program know which songs I would like or not? They take an algorithm and your select music taste and analyze through other playlists that contain the same songs as you.
The next engineering feat that combines art and engineering is going to be so exciting! But back to the defiant ones, the pioneers of the music industry paved a new path in music, fashion, and they were visionaries. This is what engineering is for me, to be a visionary of seeing the future and learning the necessities to build your own path. Now that is what makes engineering so exciting for me.
