Hey y’all! Happy New Year.
It’s officially my last semester. I have very mixed emotions about this. Of course I will be sad to leave USC, but I am also ready to say I conquered my engineering degree (which I had countless doubts about conquering) and officially call myself an engineer.
As a second semester senior, I can attest to the fact that your engineering experience should not just be about locking yourself in the library and hunching over your computer all the time. You’ll definitely have to do a lot of this, but I am proud of the fact that I did not spend the majority of my college experience doing this. You can if you want to, but USC has way too many resources and opportunities, in my opinion, for you to spend all your time in the library.
Today, I spoke to a group of prospective high school students that were touring USC and answered their questions about life in Viterbi. As I talked about the experiences I’ve had in college, I realized that none of my favorite memories had anything to do with the classes I was in. All the things that have been in my top memories are ones that I created myself by heading out to find opportunities that USC had at my fingertips.
And I am still creating more of these memories in my last semester. I am headed to Hawaii next weekend to present research at an artificial intelligence conference, which I also attended last year in New Orleans. How cool is that?!
Other than ensuring that my courses are on track for graduation and soaking up the time I have left here, I am enjoying spending lots of time at my church, volunteering at the Ventura County Rescue Mission (an awesome program where homeless men are provided food and shelter for 10 months while they are trained to get jobs upon graduation), and getting ready to find an apartment near my new job at Walt Disney Animation Studios. I am working a little bit before graduation in this position so I can get used to the workflow and study the data in the Animation department. That way, when I switch to full-time work upon graduation, I won’t be a complete newbie. I’m pumped to work at Disney because I loved my internship there last summer, and I knew I wanted to combine both technology and art at work each day. God always knows what He is doing, so I have learned to completely put my trust in Him and watch the rest unfold!
I’ll keep y’all updated on my final semester highlights. Fight on forever!
