I have two amazing sisters, and one of them is going through the college application process this year. I thought that I would write her a letter that includes some advice that you could take if you are applying to college as well. Hope you enjoy!
I can’t believe you are applying to college! It seems like yesterday we were just little girls playing hide-and-seek and making snow cones after dance class. While I seriously hope I’ll be able to call you a fellow Trojan next year, I want you to go through the process with an open mind and do what’s best for you. I hope you take these pieces of advice and use them in your college application search and beyond:
1) Pick the place where you feel you are likely to grow the most.
And I don’t just mean academic growth—I hope you become stronger in your friendships, stronger in your motivation, stronger in your athletic pursuits, and stronger in your confidence. College isn’t just about studying for four years and leaving to enter the workforce. It’s an opportunity to make mistakes, learn what you want to pursue, and achieve things you never thought you could achieve.
2) Focus on showcasing your personality through your essays.
You are more than just a number. Your grades and test scores do not showcase your sense of humor, your compassionate heart, and your unique ways of solving problems. Write your essays well and don’t be afraid to be yourself in your writing.
3) Know your worth and understand that you will end up where you’re meant to be.
Your hard work in high school has prepared you for this moment, and I truly believe you will end up where you are supposed to be. You will join a place where you are valued and will be able to learn at your fullest potential. Don’t let the process overwhelm you because you have everything you need to make an impact on any campus, wherever it may be in the world!
Once again, I sincerely hope you can throw up the “Fight On” before your high school graduation, but I will be so happy for you no matter what happens. I know that the college application process will be a great learning process for you, and I cannot wait to be there with you through the surprises and excitement!
