Meet Namita

Computer Science
Class of ’20

Hi! I’m Namita, I’m a sophomore studying Computer Science and am from Irvine, California. I am a wannabe vegan who is probably the most loyal customer the Nekter location on campus has ever seen. I love to sing, so I joined USC’s Bollywood a Capella group, Asli Baat. I’m on the Officer Council for the Society of Women Engineers and a member of the project-based computer science organization, Scope. I’m also the VP of Marketing for HackSC Jr., a team that puts on a hackathon every semester for elementary and middle school students. Keep scrolling to check out what my #ViterbiLife is like!

Involvements

I’m in SWE’s Officer Council and I absolutely love it. We put on professional, community outreach, and social events. Not only has SWE helped me grow professionally, it’s also given me a community of amazing engineers who are always willing to go above and beyond to help each other out whenever one of us needs it.

HackSC Jr puts on a hackathon for elementary and middle schoolers in the Los Angeles area to foster an interest in computer science. Planning the event is a lot of fun, but what I love most of all is interacting with the kids the actual day of. They’re all really happy to be there and excited to make their projects. They love sharing their ideas with you and it’s a lot of fun just hanging out with them while they code!
Asli Baat (AB) is USC’s premier South Asian a capella group. We travel and compete all over California. I’ve met a lot of amazing people by singing with AB and our performances will always be on the list of my best college memories.

My Major at USC: Computer Science

My Favorite Classes
This class was my first exposure to programming, ever. I had zero computer science-related experience coming into college, so I was nervous about taking on my CS classes at first. Once we started working on our C++ lab assignments though, I got really into the work and I realized that I have more than enough resources to not only do well in the class, but to also have fun with it.
The theme for my specific class was “Our Disguises, Ourselves.” The class culminated in a Thematic Option Research Conference where I got to present a research paper I wrote for my class. We were pretty much given free reign to choose whatever book from the course we wanted to write about on whatever topic we liked. I had so much fun writing my paper, especially because I got to present my ideas to an audience at the end.

My Tips for You

Application Essays

Talk about the things that you love about yourself, anything that makes you feel like you are a cool person. Don’t be afraid to step away from conventional rules and put as much of your personality in your responses as you can!

Application Extracurriculars

Extracurriculars are a great way to discover more about yourself and what you actually like. They can also be a really fun way to meet people who are interested in the same things as you, so just branch out and don’t be afraid to take some risks by trying something completely new!

Two Truths and a Lie

Can you guess which of these are true or false?
True! Although I was born in America, my family moved to Bangalore when I was 4 months old. We didn’t come back to America until almost a decade later, so I’ve pretty much lived half my life on the other side of the world!
True! The Warriors of Fate and the War for the Universe is a really cheesy fantasy novel I wrote and published in 6th grade. I woke up at 5AM everyday to work on it before school. I still have zero clue how 11 year old me managed to wake up that early when 19 year old me can’t even fathom 8AMs.
LIES!! Pineapples are amazing and I refuse to eat a pizza that isn’t covered in those little bursts of freshness <3 [/x_accordion_item][/x_accordion][/cs_column][cs_column fade="false" fade_animation="in" fade_animation_offset="45px" fade_duration="750" type="1/4" style="padding: 0px;"][x_custom_headline level="h2" looks_like="h3" accent="false" class="mvm"]My Favorite Shows[/x_custom_headline][x_slider animation="slide" slide_time="4000" slide_speed="1000" slideshow="true" random="true" control_nav="false" prev_next_nav="true" no_container="true" ][x_slide]

OMG! Is there anyone more spectacularly chaotic, hilarious, and endearing than Jessica Day? If you want a sitcom full of bright dresses, True American, and Schmidt, I highly recommend this awesome show![/x_slide]

  • I just have to put Arrow on here because I can’t overlook the sheer awesomeness that is Felicity Smoak. She’s smart, funny, sweet, and most importantly, a badass computer scientist. She’s my idol and is the reason why I first became interested in CS.
