Derek Jones

Industrial and Systems Engineering, Class of 2022

Los Gatos, California

Hey, welcome to my blog! My name is Derek Jones and I’m a sophomore from Los Gatos, California studying Industrial and Systems Engineering. Around campus, you can find me playing on USC’s Club Volleyball team, acting as Alumni Chair of social fraternity Phi Delta Theta, and fishing with the Trojan Angler’s Club, a student fishing organization that my roommates and I founded this year. I’ve also been involved as an undergraduate research assistant with the Childress Research Group, an environmental engineering lab working to advance membrane-driven systems for water purification and desalination. In my free time, I’m most commonly spotted playing on the Santa Monica beach volleyball courts, thrift shopping for vintage t-shirts, and going to concerts. Can’t wait to see what else is in store for me here!

2 Truths, 1 Lie

Lie! I’ve actually never left the US before, but I’m really hoping to change that before graduating USC…

My Major: Industrial and Systems Engineering

Why ISE?

Since I was young, I've known that I wanted to be an engineer, but I was never sure exactly which field I was interested in. Then, late in high school, I took statistics for the first time and found a new passion for data analysis, in any capacity. With ISE being so broadly applicable and stats-driven, it seemed like the perfect fit for me.

Passion in my Field: Analytics/Data Visualization

My Favorite Courses

Every freshman at USC is required to take a general seminar class (colloquially referred to as a “g-sem”), and there’s a multitude of themes for you to choose from. Last semester, I decided to take an anthropology class that explored human history and society through the lens of food. From analyzing the medieval Christian diet to issues surrounding GMOs, I was fascinated all the way through. I even wrote a paper on the history of the hamburger, my favorite food of all time!
