Here we are back at SC, and we’re in full gear! Classes have started, football games have been won, and everything else we do is keeping us busy day after day. This year I’m taking a few awesome upper division courses, including AME 301 (Dynamics), AME 308 (Computer Aided Design with SolidWorks and SolidEdge), AME 309 (Fluid Dynamics), AME 341 (Mechoptronics- a lab course based around mechanics, optics, and electrical...
  2. Coolest Class: CTWR 321-Writing the Hour-Long Dramatic Series

So this semester I am taking a screenwriting class called “Writing the Hour-Long Dramatic Series.” It’s with Ron Friedman, the same professor I took my CTWR 412 intro to screenwriting class with, and it is definitely my coolest class this semester (or tied for coolest with EE202, which Gordy wrote about). Ron is an awesome professor, and he is so great at extricating greatness from his students. Early in the...
  3. Coolest Class: Viscous Flow!

My favorite class I’ve taken so far at USC is CHE-442: Viscous Flow.  While this is generally thought of as the hardest class in the Chem-E curriculum, it has also ended up being the most fun.  The class introduces students to topics in basic fluid dynamics and then expands to explore all the ways that a fluid moves: across a surface, through a pipe, or radially into a water well....

This week’s blog is supposed to be about our coolest class. But I would have to say that my coolest class so far is my Engineering iPodia class.  This class is taken with students from Peking University in China and the National Taiwan University.  I’ve already written about it and you can read my previous blog right here: http://viterbivoices.usc.edu/ashlyn/engineering-ipodia/  Then I got to thinking about what my second coolest class is...
  5. Coolest Class: Senior Projects Laboratory (AME 441)

Throughout my four years at USC, I’ve gotten to take some awesome classes. Outside of engineering, I’d have to say my favorite class has been a Film Symposium course on Alfred Hitchcock (through the Cinema School) taught by Dr. Drew Casper, one of the world’s foremost experts on his work. It was an awesome introduction to one of the best directors/producers that has ever lived, and I got to see...

With only one week left of classes, summer is just around the corner. Which also means that my time here in California is also coming to an end. Although I’m really sad to leave USC after 4 amazing years here, I’m really looking forward to all the good things yet to come. The day after graduation my family and I will be flying home to Georgia. I’ll have a month...
  8. Coolest Class: CE 334 – “The class where you break stuff”

One of my favorite classes I took as a civil engineer is CE 334. Technically, it’s called “Mechanical Behavior of Materials” but everyone in the department likes to refer to it as “the class where you break stuff” because the lab component is all about applying load to various materials until they reach failure. We stretch metal until it pulls like taffy and breaks (tensile test), we mix concrete by...
  9. Coolest Class: Astronautics 101

Of all the courses I’ve taken at USC, the coolest one had to be my astronautics 101 course. It was my first real engineering course, and as with all engineering 101 courses, I took it during my first semester at USC. My professor was a part time lecturer, and spent the days he wasn’t at USC at Edwards Air Force Base in Palmdale, California. His job at Edwards was a...
  10. Coolest Class: Introduction to Separation Processes (CHE 350)

Right now, I am getting close to finishing up my third chemical engineering class at USC, called Introduction to Separation Processes.  I really enjoy this class, because it is one of the first classes I have taken at USC where it takes theoretical concepts we have been learning in our other classes and applying them to industry and the real world.  A lot of the time, it can get boring...
