Civil Engineering, Class of 2020

Miami, Fl

Hey there, I’m Camila! Welcome to my student page. I’m a Colombian from Weston, Florida, studying Civil Engineering with an emphasis in Building Science. At USC, I’ve been involved with the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), Construction Management Association of America (CMAA), and the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI)! Over the past couple of summers, I’ve done research abroad in China where I studied the development of bamboo for structural applications, and had internships at Arup, one of the leading companies in the built environment. There’s so much food and culture in LA, so every weekend I try to go somewhere new! Whether it’s nearby hikes, ice cream shops, or art museums, there’s never a shortage of places and experiences to explore. Check out #myViterbiLife below!

My Favorite LA Spots

2 Truths, 1 Lie

This is true! It was at a petting zoo, but I regret it and feel bad for the ostrich.

My Involvements

  •  SHPE, an organization that aims to help an underrepresented minority to succeed professionally and give back to the community. SHPE has so many amazing components to it. It puts on outreach events that teach elementary to high school students about engineering as well as networking hours which help memebers create connections with companies they want to work with. Furthermore, there are a lot of fun social events!

My Major: Civil Engineering

     Why Civil?

Within the built environment there is a great potential to create positive social impact and re-design our cities to be more sustainable and resilient.

Passion in my Field

  • Cool Projects! This one is the ongoing completion of Antoni Gaudi’s La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona using modern techniques for parametric design

  • Sustainable design! There are so many passive methods to create structures that use less energy and water that just make sense.

Passion in the Classroom

My Favorite Courses

This is a junior level class for Civil Engineers in the building science emphasis. It is taught by David Gerber, and incredible professor who has done amazing research and work in both architecture and engineering firms. In this class, we define our own thesis behind the design of a school. Check out my blog about my project for this class!
